Vintage Character Domaine Charles van Canneyt Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 is a finely etched expression of one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most intimate and coveted grands crus, delivering the domaine’s hallmark purity and precision.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was a cool, frost-affected year with a challenging growing season: severe spring frosts and a relatively mild summer reduced yields but preserved bright acidity and a classical, red-fruited profile in many reds, including this wine. In the glass, this Pinot Noir offers lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry coulis and cranberry, framed by rose petal, violet and a subtle blood-orange zest. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet poised, with high, mouth-watering acidity, silky but persistent medium-high tannins and a fine thread of earthy, mineral depth; oak is beautifully integrated, adding clove, vanilla pod, light toast and a hint of cocoa and savory spice. Notes of sous-bois, dried rose, truffle and a touch of game suggest impressive aging potential, leading to a long, refined finish, and it makes a superb partner for roast pigeon, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or a simple plate of duck breast with cherry jus.
Winery Background Grandson of the legendary Vosne-Romanée vigneron Alain Hudelot-Noëllat, Charles van Canneyt has established his own micro-négociant label in Burgundy as a reference point for precise, terroir-focused wines sourced from top sites across the Côte d’Or. While he remains closely linked to the family estate, this separate project allows him to work with carefully selected growers in grands crus such as Griotte-Chambertin, where fruit from very small holdings is vinified with a restrained, low-intervention philosophy that emphasizes gentle extraction, careful élevage and judicious use of fine-grained oak. The aim is finesse over sheer power, capturing each vineyard’s personality with clarity and detail, and the tiny production from this minuscule grand cru climat underlines both the rarity and collectability of this cuvée for Burgundy enthusiasts.
