Vintage Character Domaine Charles van Canneyt Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 is a rare, micro‑production Burgundy from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most coveted grands crus, long admired for its strikingly pure red-fruited character. The 2017 vintage in Burgundy is generally regarded as a very good, classically styled year: a relatively early but even growing season, with warm, sunny conditions and limited weather extremes, produced wines that combine ripe, supple fruit with vibrant acidity and finely knit tannins, offering clarity of terroir and approachability without sacrificing ageing potential.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing In the glass, this Grand Cru unfurls layers of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, cranberry and red plum, lifted by violet and rose petal notes. Subtle baking spice, clove, vanilla and light toast weave in with hints of smoke and savory herbs, leading to nuanced impressions of forest floor, dried rose, sous‑bois, truffle, leather, sweet tobacco and a twist of dried orange peel. The palate is medium‑bodied with high, luminous acidity and refined, medium tannins, giving a long, precise, mineral finish. Its elegance and complexity make it an outstanding partner for roast pigeon, duck breast with cherries, veal tenderloin in morel sauce, or a simple plate of roasted root vegetables with herbs. Grandson of the legendary Burgundian vigneron Alain Hudelot-Noëllat, Charles van Canneyt created his own boutique label to showcase top Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune terroirs through a meticulous micro‑négoce approach.
Winery Background In addition to managing winemaking at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, he sources grapes and sometimes must from trusted growers, including in the tiny Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru appellation of just under 3 hectares, and oversees élevage in his own cellar to craft wines that are classical in style, finely etched and profoundly terroir‑driven. His philosophy centers on precise, transparent Burgundy: careful fruit selection, gentle extraction, and judicious use of oak are all aimed at preserving purity, detail, and age‑worthy structure while capturing Griotte-Chambertin’s signature of pure cherry fruit and floral finesse. Even the understated, traditional label reflects this focus, keeping the spotlight firmly on the historic vineyard name and the authenticity of its expression in the glass.
