Vintage Character 2023 is a rare Burgundy vintage that offers both quality and quantity, with ripe fruit in a large crop. Summer weather was unstable, but a sunny, hot end to the season ripened the fruit while keeping alcohol moderate. Red and white alike show a balance in which alcohol, acidity, tannin and fruit sit in harmony, and the wines are charming young. In 2023, the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from Marchand-Tawse reflects that season. Clos de la Roche is the largest grand cru of Morey-Saint-Denis and is known for firm, structured Pinot Noir. As a grand cru, it comes from the highest tier of the classification, which covers only a small share of the vineyards in the region.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Red and black cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal come first, with a touch of spice. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate sits between the firmness of Gevrey and the finesse of Chambolle, with fine-grained tannins. Bottle age brings forest floor, truffle and savoury notes. Roast duck, quail and wild mushroom risotto are natural partners. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like.
Winery Background Maison Marchand-Tawse grew from a partnership announced in January 2011 between Pascal Marchand and Moray Tawse. Marchand, a Quebec native who settled in Burgundy in the 1980s, took charge of Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard at the age of 22, and Tawse owns a winery in Ontario. The house makes wines from a wide range of appellations in cellars in Nuits-Saint-Georges, alongside about 7.5 hectares of its own vines worked biodynamically. Thomas Dinel is the winemaker listed for the range. This wine sits among the top sites in the village and sets the benchmark for the house's Morey bottlings.
