Vintage Character 2022 followed the frost-hit 2021 and was a generous year, with a hot, dry summer and an early harvest that began before the end of August for some growers. The red wines combine the fruit and tannin of a warm season with the freshness and moderate body of a cooler one. In 2022, the Côte de Nuits Villages from Marchand-Tawse reflects that season. Côte de Nuits-Villages is an appellation for villages at the northern and southern ends of the Côte de Nuits, including Fixin, Brochon, Prissey, Comblanchien and Corgoloin. A village wine comes from vineyards within a single commune and carries the name of that commune or site.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Bright cherry, raspberry and a touch of earth lead the nose. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is fresh and juicy, with fine tannins and an honest, direct finish. It can develop forest floor and dried flowers with a few years of age. Roast chicken, duck and soy-glazed pork are easy partners. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. This is a 375 ml half bottle. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape that shows differences of site and vintage clearly, which is why Burgundy takes vineyard names so seriously.
Winery Background Maison Marchand-Tawse grew from a partnership announced in January 2011 between Pascal Marchand and Moray Tawse. Marchand, a Quebec native who settled in Burgundy in the 1980s, took charge of Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard at the age of 22, and Tawse owns a winery in Ontario. The house makes wines from a wide range of appellations in cellars in Nuits-Saint-Georges, alongside about 7.5 hectares of its own vines worked biodynamically. Thomas Dinel is the winemaker listed for the range. This wine offers the Côte de Nuits style at a more approachable level.
