Vintage Character The 2023 season gave Bourgogne Pinot Noir a generous crop, but it also demanded careful decisions. A slightly delayed budburst helped vines escape the rare spring frosts, while sunny flowering in early June set plentiful bunches. Later, intermittent storms supplied water between spells of heat. At harvest, intense late-summer sunshine advanced sugar and colour; growers had to remove any scorched or shrivelled berries. Maison Marchand-Tawse's Bourgogne Rouge Côte d'Or therefore belongs to a year shaped by both abundance and selection. The weather favoured concentration, while sorting helped protect balance.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing This is Pinot Noir from the Côte d'Or's regional appellation, at 13% alcohol, rather than from a named village or single grand cru. It offers an introduction to the area's red-wine language. Red cherry, raspberry and violet come first, with clove and a light earthy note, and dried flowers, forest floor and truffle can develop with a few years in bottle. Fruit and texture carry the first impression, with acidity giving the finish definition. Roast chicken, mushroom dishes or charcuterie suit it well. Serve slightly cool in a Burgundy glass and give the wine time to open, so that its ripe fruit and line can both show.
Winery Background Maison Marchand-Tawse is based in Nuits-Saint-Georges and presents a range extending from regional wines to more specific Burgundy appellations. It grew out of the partnership of Pascal Marchand and Moray Tawse, announced in 2011, and Mark Fincham serves as chief winemaker. The regional designation allows a broader Côte d'Or expression than a village-labelled wine. The result is a Pinot Noir tied to a warm, productive year, with regional breadth and a clear Côte d'Or address.
