Vintage Character The 2023 Bernkasteler Riesling Kabinett Fruchtig is a fruit-led Mosel Riesling from a fast, unsettled year. A hot, dry June gave way to heavy rain from the end of July, and very warm September nights accelerated sugar accumulation. Growers then faced a short harvest window and the need to select healthy fruit. The German Wine Institute reports that Riesling kept a pleasing balance between acidity and sweetness despite those extremes. In this Kabinett that points to vivid fruit rather than heavy body: ripeness carried by a light, energetic frame, at just 8% alcohol.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Fruchtig signals a fruit-focused style with a degree of sweetness, rather than the bone-dry shape of a GG. Green apple, lime and white peach form the aromatic centre, with a faint floral note and a Mosel slate impression around them. The palate is light on its feet, with high acidity keeping the fruit bright and the finish clean despite the residual sweetness. Chilled prawns, roast chicken with lemon or a moderately spicy Thai salad all benefit from the sweet-acid contrast. Serve well chilled, then let the glass warm enough to show its fruit. Very sweet desserts or powerful smoked sauces would overwhelm its delicacy.
Winery Background The Erben Müller-Burggraef branch of Dr. H. Thanisch belongs to a Bernkastel winegrowing tradition of more than 375 years. The estate owns steep Riesling sites including Berncasteler Doctor, Lay, Graben and Badstube, and describes substantial hand work on slopes too demanding for routine mechanisation. Maximilian Ferger is the winemaker, and the traditional cellar beneath the Doctor vineyard remains part of the estate's history alongside modern facilities. The broader Bernkasteler name gives this Kabinett a village identity, blending fruit from the area rather than a single named vineyard, while Fruchtig tells the drinker to expect a fruit-focused style.
