Vintage Character The 2020 Barrique Pinot Noir GG is a dry Mosel red from the Erben Müller-Burggraef branch of the Thanisch family. Across the Mosel, 2020 was the third dry growing year in succession, which made vineyard water supply especially important. Hot weather brought an early start to picking for early-ripening grapes, at the end of August and beginning of September, before cooler, wetter weather interrupted later harvest work. The early warmth shows in the wine's preserved-cherry richness, while a clean, fresh line stops the barrique ageing from dominating. Dry-season ripeness and retained definition mark this 2020 bottling.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Preserved cherry comes together with toasted oak and a light smoky edge on the nose. On the palate it is juicy and intense yet stays clean and fresh, with discreet roast notes, medium tannins and a firm finish. The dry style and 13% alcohol suit roast poultry, duck with herbs or grilled mushrooms, dishes with enough savoury depth for the oak without burying the fruit. A little air brings out the cherry and spice, but serving it too warm would blur the freshness that balances its structure. Around 16 degrees works well.
Winery Background The estate belongs to the Erben Müller-Burggraef line, a distinct branch from the similarly named Erben Thanisch winery, and traces more than 375 years of family winegrowing on the Middle Mosel. It works steep Mosel sites where manual vineyard work is essential, and Maximilian Ferger is the winemaker. For this Pinot Noir, fruit comes from Lieserer Niederberg-Helden, is hand selected and spends 18 months in French barriques before unfiltered bottling. That red-wine treatment differs from the estate's Riesling methods and gives this bottling its combination of ripe fruit, roast complexity and a firm frame.
