Ata Rangi Martinborough Chardonnay 'Potiki' 2023
Vintage Character
The 2023 Ata Rangi Chardonnay Potiki from Martinborough exemplifies the vibrancy and clarity of New Zealand’s cool-climate terroir. Benefiting from a warm, dry summer, the 2023 vintage produced grapes with excellent ripeness and balanced acidity, resulting in wines noted for their purity and energy. This estate Chardonnay opens with expressive aromas of white peach, lemon zest, and a subtle flinty edge, complemented by gentle hints of toasted almond and vanilla derived from careful oak maturation.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
On the palate, it offers a graceful texture, featuring layers of stone fruit, citrus, and a delicate saline mineral thread that adds depth and complexity. The finish is long, refreshing, and finely etched, making it a versatile partner for dishes such as roasted chicken with herbs, grilled lobster, or a simple plate of Camembert cheese. Its lively character also pairs beautifully with lightly seasoned Cantonese steamed fish, highlighting its adaptability at the table.
Winery Background
Founded in 1980, Ata Rangi stands as a benchmark producer in Martinborough, recognized for its dedication to sustainable viticulture and meticulous, minimal intervention winemaking. The family-owned estate has earned a reputation for crafting wines of exceptional concentration and balance, thanks to low-yielding vines rooted in ancient river gravels and clay soils. This unique terroir imparts a distinctive mineral backbone and elegance to their wines. Ata Rangi’s philosophy centers on respecting the land and harnessing the subtleties of their environment, with a focus on quality over quantity. Each bottle reflects the expertise and passion of the team, establishing Ata Rangi as a true icon in the landscape of New Zealand fine wine.
