Vintage Character 2019 was marked by high temperatures and low rainfall, with striking similarities to 2003, although the heat spikes were less dramatic. Some grapes were scorched, which cut volume, yet hot days and cool nights toward harvest preserved balance. Many growers rate the vintage as exceptional and some put it ahead of the fine 2018. In 2019, the 'Les Pommiers' Extra Brut from Philippe Lancelot reflects that season. Les Pommiers is a Pinot Meunier cuvée from the estate and is not a grand cru bottling.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing White peach, yellow apple and citrus peel lead, with brioche and a light spice. It is Extra Brut in style, with medium body and high acidity. The palate is fruity and fresh, with bright acidity and a clean, dry finish. Time adds hazelnut, pastry and dried citrus. Roast chicken, fried seafood and dim sum suit it. Serve at about 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in a tulip-shaped or white wine glass. Meunier is a fruity, early-ripening grape that adds softness to Champagne. It also makes a fine aperitif, and the acidity cuts through fried food and richer dishes. Pour sparkling wine gently and let the mousse settle, which helps the aromas and the fine texture show.
Winery Background Philippe Lancelot makes champagne in Cramant on the Côte des Blancs, from an estate created by his parents in the mid-1970s. He took over the family estate in 2007 and farms about 4 hectares spread over Cramant, Avize, Chouilly and the hills above Épernay. Biodynamic practices began in 2012, followed by Ecocert certification in 2014 and Demeter in 2015. No sulphur has been added in the cellar since 2015, with each plot left to express itself. This wine is an Extra Brut, with very little added sugar. Philippe says his aim is to capture the character of each vintage as faithfully as possible.
