Vintage Character The Marlborist 'Grande Sauvignon' Sauvignon Blanc 2023 emerged from a season that tested vineyard attention before rewarding patience. A wet winter and damp spring were followed by grey early-summer weather, increasing disease pressure and making careful canopy work important. Sunnier conditions returned later, and steady March ripening allowed flavour and colour to develop. The estate describes concentrated fruit and substantial palate weight from the year. In 2023, the estate's concentrated fruit followed a difficult early season and a steadier March, when slower ripening gave flavours time to develop before picking.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Grilled peach and pineapple mingle with elderflower, almond and brioche, while citrus supplies a fresh thread through the richer notes. The dry palate is creamy and concentrated, with a firm line of acidity carrying flavour into a long finish. Oak contributes savoury detail rather than simply sweetness, and the wine's texture is as important as its perfume. Roast chicken with herbs provides a useful bridge between richness and freshness; seared scallops with a light butter sauce also suit its breadth. Give it a little air in the glass to reveal the interplay of fruit and savoury nuances.
Winery Background Richard Ellis leads winemaking at The Marlborist, drawing on experience at Greywacke and Ata Rangi. Co-founder Stu Dudley oversees viticultural relationships, while Dave Nash directs the brand. For Grande Sauvignon, low-yielding fruit is hand-picked and fermented with naturally occurring yeast in old French barrels and larger puncheons. This combination, followed by lees contact, gives the wine its distinctive texture. It is a considered extension of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc's possibilities, grounded in vineyard work and restrained handling.
