Vintage Character The Marlborist Chardonnay 2024 belongs to a dry, settled Marlborough season. Low winter rainfall and cooler flowering conditions reduced fruit set, while warm, windy summer weather brought persistent drought. A cooler spell in early March then slowed ripening and gave the team more time to choose its picking moments. Small crops and healthy fruit encouraged intensity without requiring a rushed harvest. The estate's small, healthy 2024 crop therefore met a useful pause in early March, when cooler weather slowed ripening and allowed picking to follow fruit development more closely.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Roasted almond, hazelnut, vanilla and a smoky accent frame peach and pear on the nose. The palate moves towards pineapple, mango and roasted apple, with smooth fruit weight followed by nutty and gently spicy detail. It is a dry, medium-to-full-bodied style whose breadth invites food, while the citrus-like freshness keeps the finish moving. Salmon sautéed in butter makes a natural partner to its savoury richness; chicken in a light cream sauce follows the same balance. Avoid serving it excessively cold, as a little warmth in the glass reveals more of the fruit beneath the toasted aromas.
Winery Background The Marlborist is led by winemaker Richard Ellis, viticulturist Stu Dudley and brand director Dave Nash. Their project draws on long experience in the region, including Ellis's work at Greywacke and Ata Rangi. This Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeast in wood and undergoes malolactic fermentation. Barrel maturation is followed by time in stainless steel, allowing texture and fruit to come together before release. The method explains its layered, savoury character without obscuring the vineyard's contribution.
