Vintage Character Alain Michelot Bourgogne Rouge 2021 comes from the Bourgogne Rouge regional appellation in Bourgogne. Spring frost and unsettled weather tested the vines, while rain from late June into early August increased disease pressure. Dry conditions and a north wind from mid-August then aided ripening; Pinot Noir generally preceded Chardonnay at harvest. Smaller crops and a return to more typical September picking dates distinguish this cooler year from the warmer seasons around it. For Pinot Noir from Bourgogne Rouge, the season puts acidity and tannin texture in dialogue with red-fruit ripeness. In the Bourgogne Rouge appellation bottling, expect supple fruit and easy movement.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing A lifted violet note follows the cherry and raspberry fruit, while quiet spice and earth keep the nose savoury. On the palate it is dry and medium in body, with fine, medium tannin and medium-high acidity giving the Bourgogne fruit a fresh frame. The finish is fresh and easy, with forest floor and dried flowers adding depth as the wine ages. Try it with roast quail and wild mushrooms, or glazed duck with mild spices; the fine tannin and medium-high acidity suit these dishes without overpowering them.
Winery Background Domaine Alain Michelot has been developed by four generations since 1880 and farms about 8 hectares in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Morey-Saint-Denis and Clos de Vougeot. Quality and authenticity are the domaine's stated aims. Élodie Michelot, Alain's daughter, now runs winemaking, and the wines are raised in French oak barrels for roughly 15 to 18 months depending on the cuvée. Here, the Bourgogne Rouge bottling shows that family approach at the regional level.
