Vintage Character Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin 'Vieilles Vignes' 2024 combines old-vine concentration with the freshness of a cool, challenging vintage. Rainfall and difficult flowering sharply reduced the potential crop, while mildew demanded exceptional vigilance in the vineyards. Alexandrine Roy maintained healthy fruit at the estate, where picking started on 13 September. The gentle cellar work and comparatively short maturation kept the fruit vivid, rather than trying to turn a delicate year into a heavier one. This 2024 has depth but remains energetic, with a reserved opening and moderate tannins that leave room for its fruit to emerge as the wine relaxes.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing A dark-fruited impression introduces a concentrated palate, followed by clearer red-fruit notes towards the finish. The tannins are fine rather than forceful, although the wine is still tightly composed and benefits from time to unfold. Its long finish preserves a sense of freshness alongside the fruit's intensity. Roast partridge, grilled pork with thyme, or a mushroom and barley risotto would all be suitable companions. These dishes provide enough texture to meet the wine without obscuring it. Let it open gradually in a generous glass, and avoid overly sweet accompaniments that could make its youthful structure seem firmer.
Winery Background Alexandrine Roy is the fourth generation of her family to work these Gevrey-Chambertin vineyards, taking over from her father Marc in 2003. Vieilles Vignes draws on several estate parcels rather than a single named vineyard, bringing together the depth of mature vines with the domaine's preference for supple texture. The grapes are destemmed and ferment with indigenous yeasts before barrel maturation. Rigorous selection and restrained extraction support a style in which concentration is carried by fruit and fine tannins rather than overt force.
