Vintage Character Giuseppe Cappellano Barolo 'Piè Rupestris' DOCG 2018 comes from Barolo’s Serralunga d'Alba zone, where the estate’s celebrated Gabutti vineyard gives Nebbiolo a distinctly firm, mineral profile. The 2018 vintage in Barolo was generally more classical than powerful, shaped by a growing season that favored freshness and aromatic definition over sheer concentration, making it a year that rewards patience and careful decanting. In this context, Gabutti’s compact soils and Serralunga’s reputation for structured, long-lived wines give Piè Rupestris its particular authority, combining floral lift with an iron-tinged, deeply savory backbone.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The wine opens with precise aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose, orange peel and licorice, followed by hints of tar, earth and sweet spices. On the palate it is full-bodied yet finely cut, with high acidity and assertive tannins carrying flavors of cranberry, pomegranate, tea leaf and crushed herbs through a long, saline, classically austere finish. This is Barolo for lovers of tension and detail rather than opulence. Pair it with braised veal shank, porcini risotto, or roast duck.
Winery Background Founded in 1870, Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most revered traditional estates, long associated with Serralunga d'Alba and with an uncompromising philosophy that places terroir above fashion. The family is also famous for Barolo Chinato, and under Augusto Cappellano the house has continued the late Teobaldo Cappellano’s commitment to organic farming, hand-harvesting, indigenous-yeast fermentations and long elevage in large Slavonian oak botti rather than small barriques. The name Piè Rupestris refers to vines grafted onto Rupestris rootstock, and the wine stands as a benchmark expression of old-school Barolo: transparent to site, structured for cellar development, and admired for its integrity.
