Simonsig Estate Pinotage 2023
Vintage Character
Simonsig Pinotage 2023 from Stellenbosch in South Africa’s Coastal Region is an estate wine that captures one of the Cape’s signature grapes in a classically ripe, polished style. The 2023 vintage benefited from generally balanced growing conditions in Stellenbosch, supporting healthy fruit development and fresh natural acidity, which gives the wine both approachability and structure. Stellenbosch’s decomposed granite and sandstone-derived soils, moderated by maritime influence and the cooling effect of mountain slopes, help Pinotage retain brightness while building dark fruit depth and savory complexity.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
On the nose, this wine shows blackberry, black cherry and plum layered with violet, sweet spice and a light touch of vanilla oak. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with supple tannins, lively acidity and a rounded texture that carries notes of juicy dark berries, cocoa and a faint smoky earthiness through a clean, persistent finish. It pairs well with rosemary lamb chops, grilled pork sausages, or roast duck with cherry glaze.
Winery Background
Simonsig Estate is one of Stellenbosch’s historic family producers, founded by the Malan family and long recognized as a pioneer of modern South African wine. The estate helped establish Pinotage’s reputation for quality bottlings and is also credited with producing South Africa’s first Méthode Cap Classique. Fruit is estate-grown, and the cellar philosophy balances varietal expression with careful polish, using modern vinification and measured oak maturation to preserve freshness while adding texture and complexity. That blend of heritage, innovation and consistency makes Simonsig a dependable benchmark for accessible premium Cape wine.
