Vintage Character Champagne Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2006 is a prestige Champagne shaped by a late improvement in the weather. A dry first quarter was followed by heavy spring rain, then a warm June favoured flowering. August turned cold and humid before September warmth and sunshine restored momentum. Picking across the relevant vineyards ran from 6 to 25 September. That sequence gave healthy, ripe fruit without removing the season's fresh backbone. Pinot Noir provides the blend's principal structural voice, with Chardonnay contributing finesse; the exact proportions remain the house's secret rather than a published numerical recipe.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Brioche, butter and nutty aromas are complemented by quince, tangerine and a gentle nougat-like richness. The palate is broad and silky, while fresh acidity keeps the finish energetic and prevents the richer flavours from becoming heavy. Roast chicken, turbot with a light butter sauce or mushroom vol-au-vents would suit its vinous depth. These pairings work through savoury richness and texture rather than sweetness. Allowing the wine to warm slightly from a cool serving temperature can reveal more of its layered aromas, while a moderately roomy glass gives the fruit room to develop.
Winery Background Pol Roger created this cuvée as a tribute to Sir Winston Churchill, favouring the robust, mature style associated with his taste. It draws on Grand Cru vineyards and is made only in selected vintages, with release later than the house's other vintage Champagnes. Dominique Petit was cellar master during the 2006 season. Cool fermentation, malolactic fermentation and bottle maturation in deep, cool cellars form part of the production approach. Each bottle is riddled by hand, completing a patient cellar approach that brings a fine mousse to this broad, Pinot Noir-led Champagne.
