Domaine Julien Sunier Morgon 2023
Vintage Character
Morgon 2023 from Julien Sunier is a vivid expression of Beaujolais, crafted exclusively from Gamay grown on the region’s distinctive granitic soils. The 2023 vintage in Beaujolais was marked by a warm, sunny summer and even ripening, resulting in wines celebrated for their purity of fruit, supple tannins, and energetic freshness.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Awarded 87–90 points by Jasper Morris, this Morgon entices with aromas of crushed raspberries, violets, and a subtle mineral nuance, leading to a palate layered with juicy wild cherry, red currant, and a touch of black pepper. The wine’s silky texture and lively acidity culminate in a refreshing finish, accented by gentle earthiness that reflects its terroir. Exceptionally versatile at the table, it pairs beautifully with roast duck breast, grilled salmon, or a classic charcuterie platter, and also complements the savory richness of Chinese braised pork belly.
Winery Background
Julien Sunier has quickly become a leading figure in Beaujolais, recognized for his dedication to organic viticulture and a hands-off approach in the cellar. After formative experiences with renowned Burgundy domaines, Sunier launched his own label in 2008, focusing on small, carefully tended parcels in Morgon, Fleurie, and Régnié. His winemaking philosophy emphasizes site expression through the use of native yeasts, gentle extraction, and maturation in used Burgundy barrels, all designed to preserve the vibrancy and authenticity of Gamay. Sunier’s meticulous vineyard work and commitment to ecological stewardship have earned his wines a devoted following among enthusiasts seeking pure, terroir-driven Beaujolais.
