Vintage Character Bacalhoa Quinta do Carmo Vinho Tinto 2021 is a particularly Alicante-led expression: 65% Alicante Bouschet, 20% Aragonez and 15% Trincadeira. Harvesting took place in the second half of September at optimal maturity, followed by separate fermentation of each variety. At 14.5% alcohol, it is a ripe, Alicante-driven red. It still has a fresh structural counterpoint: total acidity of 6.0 g/l and a long, elegant finish. One year in French oak and a further period in bottle rounded the components before release. The later-September picking window, high Alicante proportion and measured acidity set this vintage apart.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The wine shows dense ruby colour, ripe cherry and woodland fruit, followed by spice and a discreet smoky accent from French oak. It is dry and full in the mouth, yet the tannins are polished and the finish remains fresh and long. That combination works with roast lamb, grilled meats and mature sheep's-milk cheese, each offering enough richness for the wine's structure.
Winery Background Bacalhoa acquired Quinta do Carmo in 2008. Alicante Bouschet is historically important here, alongside Aragonez and Trincadeira from clay, marble and schist soils. The estate vinifies each variety separately in controlled-temperature vessels or lagares, follows fermentation with extended skin contact and matures this red for a year in French oak. This bottling sits between the immediately fruity Dom Martinho and the longer-aged Reserva.
