Vintage Character 2009 had early complications, then a superb summer produced a clean crop of high quality. Pinot Noir did particularly well, especially on the Montagne de Reims, and the wines are plump and ripe. It is a more generous, yellow-fruited style than the intense, high-acid 2008. In 2009, the Brut Nature Grand Cru from Philippe Lancelot reflects that season. This is a Brut Nature, made without any added sugar, from Chardonnay from grand cru sites on the Côte des Blancs. Grand cru status in Champagne applies to 17 villages, and the Côte des Blancs villages of Cramant, Chouilly, Oiry, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger are among them.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing White peach, pear and citrus peel lead, with chalk, brioche and a light savoury note. It is Brut Nature in style, with medium body and high acidity. The palate is fine and linear, with bright acidity and a saline, mineral finish. Time brings hazelnut, pastry and dried citrus. Oysters, steamed fish and sashimi suit its purity. Serve at about 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in a tulip-shaped or white wine glass. With a bottle of this age, check the cork and fill level on opening, as storage history affects how it has developed. This is a 1.5-litre magnum, which many collectors prefer for ageing and for sharing. Chardonnay in Champagne gives finesse, citrus and a chalky tension. It also makes a fine aperitif, and the acidity cuts through fried food and richer dishes.
Winery Background Philippe Lancelot makes champagne in Cramant on the Côte des Blancs, from an estate created by his parents in the mid-1970s. He took over the family estate in 2007 and farms about 4 hectares spread over Cramant, Avize, Chouilly and the hills above Épernay. Biodynamic practices began in 2012, followed by Ecocert certification in 2014 and Demeter in 2015. No sulphur has been added in the cellar since 2015, with each plot left to express itself.
