Vintage Character Domaine de Cristia IGP Méditerranée Grenache 2021 is a Grenache from the IGP Méditerranée appellation, made by Domaine de Cristia. Spring frost, occasional hail and abundant rain made 2021 an uneven Rhône year. Ripening was late and harvest dates spread out, but careful work preserved acidity and aromatic freshness. Châteauneuf reds tended toward finesse and less obvious alcohol than preceding sunny seasons. For old Grenache at Pignan, this cooler year brings red fruit, flowers and the delicacy of a sandy site rather than sheer weight. The 2021 balance is fresh and distinctive.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The single Grenache brings cherry, raspberry, plum and a little dried thyme to the nose. Dry and medium bodied, the palate is supple, fresh and gently spicy, with soft tannin and a clean red-fruit finish. Grilled chicken, sausage and Mediterranean vegetables suit a wine made for uncomplicated food pleasure. A slight chill keeps the fruit nimble. This IGP wine is separate from the estate's Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: a straightforward expression of its key grape.
Winery Background It is a separate label within Domaine de Cristia's range, apart from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Grenache is the family's dominant red grape, thriving on its sandy Courthézon soils. Etienne Grangeon started the property in the 1950s; Alain broadened the plantings, and Baptiste and Dominique later sharpened the focus on parcel selection. Organic certification dates from 2008. The estate generally makes its regional reds with gentle concrete fermentation and a shorter vat maturation than Châteauneuf. The uncomplicated varietal label makes Grenache's red-fruit and herbal side the central attraction.
