Vintage Character Tscharke 'A Thing of Beauty' Grenache 2021 comes from a particularly balanced Barossa season. Useful autumn and late-spring rain left the vines with reasonable soil moisture before a comparatively mild summer. Cool mornings and restrained January temperatures supported gradual ripening, while early-February rain provided a further boost. The resulting season allowed flavour to develop without the repeated severe heat of more difficult years. For Barossa growers in 2021, the combination of replenished soil moisture, a mild summer and cooler mornings offered a longer, steadier ripening period, supporting flavour development without the pressure of repeated extreme heat.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Raspberry, red cherry and red plum supply the fruit, joined by red liquorice, fresh herbs and a touch of pepper. The palate is light-to-medium in weight, juicy and energetic, with polished tannins giving gentle definition rather than a drying grip. Earthy and spicy accents extend the fresh red-fruit finish, adding detail to a very approachable shape. Roast pork with herbs makes a good savoury partner, while grilled aubergine with lentils provides a lighter alternative. A short chill is welcome in warm weather, keeping the fruit lively and allowing the aromatic detail to stay in focus.
Winery Background Tscharke's family has farmed in the Barossa for six generations, with estate vineyards around Marananga, Stone Well, Gnadenfrei and Greenock Creek. Organic and biodynamic farming place soil health at the centre of the work. For this Grenache, different fermentation treatments build perfume and texture, including cool fermentation and concrete vessels with retained stalks. Eight months in terracotta amphorae complete the maturation. The choice supports a clear, fruit-led expression rather than imposing the overt toastiness associated with new oak.
