Vintage Character The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses 'Les Vergelesses' Premier Cru comes from a generous Burgundy harvest shaped by very different phases. Flowering took place in favourable conditions with moderate warmth, and repeated summer showers supported berry growth. A late-August heatwave then briefly checked ripening and made picking and fruit-temperature decisions more urgent. For a Pinot Noir Premier Cru in Pernand-Vergelesses, that means ample fruit potential together with the need to keep a clear, fresh outline. After 2021's rain and 2022's drought, the late heat is the distinctive 2023 challenge, and the wine meets it with poise.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Black cherry, raspberry and a hint of violet lead the nose. Beneath the fruit, red Pernand-Vergelesses shows an earthy, lightly leathery dimension, with clove and, over time, forest floor and truffle. With air the fruit and savoury sides become easier to tell apart. The dry palate is generous at the centre, yet medium-high acidity and fine tannin bring it back to a focused finish. Try roast quail, veal with mushrooms or grilled pork, which support the structure without covering the delicate floral register. A slight chill is sensible if the bottle is opened in a warm room, giving the 2023 fruit definition rather than extra weight.
Winery Background The Buffet family has been in Volnay since 1692, and Marc-Olivier Buffet continues the estate today. He describes vineyard work aimed at living soils, using cover crops, compost and herbicide-free cultivation, with some biodynamic practices and an ongoing organic conversion. Grapes are picked by hand and sorted rigorously before ageing in oak in the estate's old cellars. This Pernand wine shows why the estate's geographical range matters: it is not simply another version of its Volnay Pinot Noir, but a separate site with its own firmer, more mineral character.
