Vintage Character The 2023 Pommard 'Clos Micot' Premier Cru grew in a Burgundy season of successful flowering, useful summer showers and a generous crop, followed by a late-August heatwave that briefly slowed ripening. The September harvest began in unusual warmth, making the balance between maturity and freshness especially important for Pinot Noir. The Burgundy wine board also records the need for careful sorting across the region. In a Pommard Premier Cru, these contrasts give a ripe fruit core and call for care over tannin quality and final definition. Clos Micot is a specific climat within the appellation, not a richer version of village Pommard.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Blackberry, cherry stone and ripe plum are the aromatic reference points for Pommard, with red cherry, raspberry, violet and clove here, and spice or leather developing over time. For a young Clos Micot the dry palate offers dark fruit, substantial but not coarse tannin and an acidity that carries the finish, at 14% alcohol. A short decant helps the structure settle, and serving at cool room temperature avoids emphasising warmth. Braised beef, roast lamb or mushroom-stuffed poultry have enough savoury depth to meet the wine without any sugary sauce. It will also reward several years in the cellar.
Winery Background The Buffet family's roots in Volnay date to 1692, and Marc-Olivier now guides the domaine's vineyards in Volnay, Pommard and neighbouring appellations. His philosophy centres on living soils: the estate uses cover crops, avoids herbicides and applies biodynamic methods on selected plots while moving towards organic certification. Pommard is not treated as interchangeable with the family's Volnay wines, and the producer keeps separate named sites, including Clos Micot. The domaine, in the family for centuries, bottles around 15 appellations across the Côte de Beaune.
