Vintage Character The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 'Les Vergelesses' Premier Cru follows a Burgundy year that began with a mild, dry winter, met April frost and then endured spells of summer heat and drought. Later rain relieved the vines, and the harvest was healthy and generous compared with 2021. The Burgundy wine board notes good colour extraction and broad balance in the reds. For this Pinot Noir near the Hill of Corton, that means more open fruit and a fuller middle palate than the year before, while the Pernand origin keeps the wine in a cooler, mineral-edged register.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Ripe cherry and dark raspberry lead the nose, with violet, clove and an earthy, leathery nuance as the wine opens, and forest floor and truffle with age. The dry palate is rounder than in 2021, but medium-high acidity and fine tannins keep the fruit defined, at 14% alcohol. A gently savoury finish gives it versatility at the table. Duck breast, roast pork with herbs and mushroom tart all have enough depth for the wine without burying its Pinot Noir detail. If the bottle is young, give it a little time in the glass and serve just below room temperature.
Winery Background François Buffet is a Volnay-based family domaine whose roots in the village go back to 1692. Marc-Olivier Buffet directs the estate and describes cultivation aimed at active, healthy soils. Cover crops, compost instead of chemical fertilisers and avoidance of herbicides are part of that approach, with biodynamic ideas used on some parcels. The vines grow on marl-limestone soils at 230 to 330 metres, suited to Pinot Noir. The range includes Pernand-Vergelesses alongside the better-known Volnay wines, so distinct Côte de Beaune sites can speak separately.
