Vintage Character The 2023 François Buffet Volnay emerged from an unusually productive Burgundy growing season. Flowering was favourable and fruit set generous, while repeated summer showers maintained growth before a sudden late-August heatwave. The heat briefly slowed ripening and made the first days of September picking demanding. For Pinot Noir the regional account stresses selection and temperature control as the important responses. The vintage promises abundant fruit for this village Volnay, but the better measure is the balance between ripeness and the fine tannins for which the appellation is known.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The estate describes its village wine as soft yet full, with blackcurrant on the nose. In 2023 ripe black cherry and plum sit alongside that note, while violet and a little spice add lift. The mouthfeel is generous without becoming shapeless: fine tannins and lively acidity lead from the broad centre into a clean finish, at 13.5% alcohol. Grilled lamb chops, roast poultry or a firm cheese can meet its fruit and supple structure. Serve just below room temperature to protect the contrast between dark fruit and freshness, and open it a little ahead of the meal.
Winery Background Marc-Olivier Buffet directs a family domaine established in Volnay since 1692. The producer treats its village Volnay as a distinct expression alongside numerous individual Premier Cru sites, stressing finesse, fullness and the capacity to age with grace. Vineyard work avoids herbicides and uses cover crops and compost, with biodynamic practices on selected parcels during an organic transition. Attention to living soil and site difference is part of the estate's identity. In the plentiful 2023 vintage the village cuvée is a ready introduction to the family's Volnay style, with rounded Pinot Noir fruit, fine structure and a clear finish.
