Vintage Character The 2020 Haut-Médoc from Château d'Issan is a red wine from the estate's Haut-Médoc plots at Arsac, separate from its Margaux grand vin. In Bordeaux, 2020 began with unusually early vine growth; a warm, dry summer then advanced ripening, while the calm harvest allowed growers to wait for the different varieties. The regional account describes a balance of ripe fruit, acidity and fine tannin rather than heat alone. For this Arsac bottling those conditions give a generous but composed 2020, with fruit that is ripe yet fresh.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The estate identifies Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as the dominant grapes in this wine, at 13.5% alcohol. It shows a classic Left Bank register of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, with cedar, cocoa and graphite and a firm but polished shape. Tobacco, leather and forest floor come with age. Roast lamb, grilled mushrooms and beef with herbs are natural partners for the wine's tannic frame. Decant for about 45 minutes and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. With a bottle of some age, storage and cork condition matter as much as the general vintage character.
Winery Background Château d'Issan explains that this wine comes from vineyards around five kilometres west of the estate, within the Haut-Médoc appellation beside other classified-growth properties. That physical separation is essential to its identity: Haut-Médoc d'Issan is not simply another label for Château d'Issan's Margaux wine. Its appeal lies in connecting an established Margaux producer with a distinct appellation and parcel source, giving a Left Bank blend made with the experience of a well-known estate and offered at an accessible level.
