XiaoLing Grand Vin 2019 is a dry red from Shangri-La in Yunnan, a high-altitude corner of China that has quickly become one of the country’s most distinctive fine-wine origins. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as strong in many Chinese wine regions, and in Shangri-La the combination of abundant mountain sunlight, large day-night temperature swings, and a long growing season helped grapes reach full ripeness while preserving freshness. Sourced from vineyards around Cizhong in the upper Mekong valley, this wine’s identity is shaped by alpine conditions, dramatic elevation, and stony mountain soils that lend both lift and tension to the fruit.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
A Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend, it opens with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and dark cherry, layered with violet, dried herbs, cedar, toast and a touch of cocoa. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied, with vivid acidity, polished but firm tannins, and a core of dark fruit framed by mineral energy and discreet oak. The finish is long, savory and fresh, with hints of black tea and wet stone. It pairs especially well with roast lamb, beef tenderloin with rosemary, or grilled portobello mushrooms.

Xiaoling is a boutique estate established in 2014 in Cizhong, working with small, fragmented vineyard parcels farmed by local families in this remote Himalayan-influenced landscape. The project is closely associated with Sylvain Pitiot, formerly of Clos de Tart, whose Burgundian precision informs a parcel-by-parcel approach to site expression. Farming is described as organic in practice, with meticulous manual work required by the steep terrain and tiny plots. In the cellar, careful selection, measured extraction and élevage in fine oak aim to balance ripeness with altitude-driven freshness, giving Xiaoling a distinctive place among China’s emerging icon wines.
