2010 Balnaves The Tally Cabernet Sauvignon is a flagship Coonawarra red from South Australia, drawn from one of Australia’s most distinctive Cabernet territories. The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as outstanding in Coonawarra: a long, even growing season allowed slow ripening, delivering excellent flavour intensity while preserving structure and freshness. Its origin on Coonawarra’s celebrated Terra Rossa soils over limestone is central to the wine’s identity, giving Cabernet here its hallmark cassis fruit, fine definition, and mint-edged elegance.

The Wine Advocate awarded the 2010 vintage 94+ points, and the wine shows why with a classic, age-worthy profile. The nose opens with blackcurrant, mulberry, cedar, dark chocolate, violets, and the region’s signature mint note, while the palate is full-bodied and concentrated, shaped by firm but polished tannins and a persistent, savoury finish. There is depth without heaviness, with French oak adding spice and structure rather than excess sweetness. Pair it with herb-crusted lamb rack, dry-aged ribeye, or wild mushroom risotto.

Balnaves of Coonawarra is a family-owned estate established in 1971, built on pastoral roots and long admired for benchmark expressions of Coonawarra Cabernet. The Tally, named for the traditional counting of shorn sheep, is the estate’s flagship and is released only in stronger vintages from top vineyard parcels including Dead Morris Road and the Walker block. Fruit is hand-selected, fermented with a focus on clarity of site, then matured in French oak to build detail and longevity. That combination of family stewardship, regional fidelity, and disciplined selection makes Balnaves one of Coonawarra’s most reliable names.
