Vintage Character The 2022 Volnay 'Champans' Premier Cru belongs to a Burgundy vintage marked by summer warmth and dry spells, punctuated by rain that helped the vines recover before harvest. April frost threatened many sites, but later budburst limited losses, and September delivered healthy Pinot Noir with generous ripeness. Those conditions explain the vintage's open fruit and rounded texture, yet Champans has its own identity. The domaine calls this Volnay Premier Cru fine, silky and expansive, with a personality that can age. In 2022 the contrast is between ripe generosity and Volnay's traditionally refined tannin structure.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The producer identifies red fruit and floral notes as the signatures of Champans. In 2022 cherry and ripe raspberry lead, with rose-like lift and clove, and a supple, almost satin progression across the dry palate. Acidity brings a clear line beneath the broad fruit, and the finish shows a calm persistence, at 13.5% alcohol. Roast poultry, a veal cutlet with a light cream sauce or a mature soft cheese can meet its roundness without hiding its fragrance. Give a young bottle modest air and serve just below room temperature, to show fine texture rather than turn warmth into heaviness.
Winery Background The Buffet family settled in Volnay in 1692, and Marc-Olivier now directs the estate. Champans is among its separately named Premier Cru sites and has long been regarded as one of the village's more generous, ageworthy vineyards. The domaine's own parcel is a narrow strip of under half a hectare running the length of the cru. Its wider vineyard work avoids herbicides, uses cover crops and compost, and applies biodynamic principles selectively during its move towards organic growing. Here the supple Champans character meets the fullness of 2022 in a way that remains recognisably Volnay.
