Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 from Napa Valley is a flagship Oakville-rooted Cabernet that captures the richness and polish for which this celebrated appellation is known. In Napa, 2017 was shaped by a wet winter followed by summer heat spikes, yielding concentrated fruit and firm structure; in strong hands, it produced deeply flavored wines with impressive intensity. Far Niente draws heavily on Oakville fruit, where well-drained alluvial soils and the warm days, tempered by evening cooling, help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve both ripeness and definition.

James Suckling awarded this vintage 95 points, and the wine shows why with layered aromas of blackberry, black cherry and cassis framed by violet, cedar, espresso and sweet baking spice. The palate is full-bodied and satin-textured, with dark plum, cocoa, graphite and toasted oak notes carried by polished but persistent tannins into a long, resonant finish. It pairs beautifully with herb-crusted rack of lamb, dry-aged ribeye, or roast duck with cherry glaze.

Founded in 1885, Far Niente is one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates, restored in 1979 by Gil and Beth Nickel after decades of dormancy following Prohibition. The winery has built its reputation on a philosophy of elegance over excess, with meticulous vineyard selection, extensive handwork in the vines, and a house style that favors depth, harmony and age-worthy balance. Under the long-standing modern stewardship of the estate, the Cabernet is vinified with careful lot selection and aging in French oak, creating a benchmark expression that stands out for its refinement as much as its power.
