I Vitari Rosso di Valtellina 2020 is a Rosso di Valtellina DOC from Lombardy, made from Nebbiolo—locally called Chiavennasca—grown in one of Italy’s most striking mountain wine landscapes. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as successful in northern Italy, with warm, even conditions helping fruit ripen clearly while Valtellina’s altitude and Alpine airflow preserved the lifted acidity and finesse that define the zone. Its character comes from steep, hand-worked terraces, strong diurnal shifts, and well-drained stony soils on sun-exposed slopes, a combination that gives Nebbiolo here a lighter, more tensile expression than in Piedmont.

Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
The wine opens with vivid red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and pomegranate, followed by hints of alpine herbs, white pepper and crushed stone. On the palate it is supple yet energetic, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a graceful, savoury finish that keeps the red-fruited profile precise rather than heavy. This is a beautifully transparent style of mountain Nebbiolo that suits food exceptionally well: try it with bresaola and aged cheese, mushroom risotto, or roast veal with herbs.

Winery Background
I Vitari is a small family estate devoted to Valtellina’s tradition of heroic viticulture, where every task on the precipitous terraces must be done by hand. The estate philosophy centers on careful stewardship of the landscape and minimal intervention so that site, altitude and vintage remain clearly visible in the glass. Fermentations and élevage are handled to protect fragrance and texture rather than overwhelm the fruit, making the wine a fine introduction to the estate’s refined, alpine interpretation of Nebbiolo.
