Vintage Character Mihope Winery '1968 Family Reserve' Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 comes from the estate's gravelly A1 parcel near the Helan Mountains. The growing season began hot and dry, before temperatures became steadier and rainfall more moderate later in the cycle. Vine development was earlier than in the previous year, but a short frost-free period made full Cabernet ripening a particular challenge. The winery selected A1 for its favourable ripening conditions. That focused choice gives this wine a specific vineyard identity, connecting the vintage's difficulties to a practical response in the vineyard and cellar.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Cherry and vanilla introduce the aromatic profile, with floral and forest-like notes adding detail. The palate combines ripe fruit with an energetic, mineral-toned impression and firm tannins. Its structure gives the wine an upright, substantial shape, while a long, layered finish retains a sweet-fruited character without turning the wine into a sweet style. Slow-roasted lamb, braised beef cheeks or aged hard cheese would provide fitting companions. Each offers enough richness to work with the tannins and enough savoury depth to sit alongside the fruit, rather than competing with the wine's more delicate aromatic nuances.
Winery Background The 2022 release is entirely Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation at 25 to 26 degrees Celsius and comparatively gentle maceration were chosen to protect fruit character while limiting coarse extraction. The wine then spent an average of thirteen months in French oak, with 45% new barrels and 55% previously used wood. Repeated tasting guided the final selection. Mihope introduced the Family Reserve series in 2022, linking it to the estate's art-led identity. Its collage-style labels draw inspiration from the changing seasons of the Helan landscape, providing a visual counterpart to a wine shaped by a particular place and year.
