Vintage Character Mihope Winery 'Limited Release' Dry Red 2021 benefits from a season with abundant sunshine and marked differences between daytime and night-time temperatures. At Mihope, the frost-free period lasted 163 days and sunshine totalled 2,208 hours. Flowering began five days earlier than in the preceding year, while a reported daily temperature range of 16.3°C provided a striking contrast to the warmth of the afternoons. Such conditions gave the estate scope to develop ripe flavours while retaining a fresh line. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah come together in this vintage, combining a broad fruit expression with the structure expected of a substantial Ningxia red.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Black cherry and blueberry are joined by raspberry, giving the nose a mix of deep and brighter fruit tones. Cocoa, liquorice and coffee add a darker register as the wine opens. The palate is full yet supple, with layers of fruit unfolding towards a lingering, sweet-fruited finish rather than an overtly sweet taste. Its generous texture calls for dishes with substance: try roast duck, braised beef cheeks or a mushroom and lentil casserole. The savoury elements of these pairings help bring the wine's fruit and roasted notes into balance at the table.
Winery Background Mihope's development began in 2011 after research into the conditions of Ningxia's eastern Helan foothills. Precision irrigation and controlled cellar temperatures form part of its modern approach, alongside the cultivation of several international grape varieties. Blending is therefore an important means of expressing the estate, allowing different components to contribute aroma, texture and depth. The 2021 Limited Release shows this approach clearly, with three varieties shaping a layered red whose interest lies as much in the relationship between its parts as in the richness of its fruit.
