Vintage Character Realm Cellars Pritchard Hill 'Houyi Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 combines mountain-grown structure with the freshness of an unusually concentrated Napa vintage. Rainfall was very low, reducing crop size and producing small berries, but cool nights and a sunny season without sustained extreme heat helped the fruit retain energy. Those conditions favoured a wine with depth as well as definition. This release is entirely Cabernet Sauvignon, assembled from five blocks of Houyi Vineyard on Pritchard Hill. The resulting structure is substantial, yet the wine's aromatic detail and supple movement show the balance possible in this dry, low-yielding year.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Red berry and dark cherry aromas are accompanied by cedar, mint and a touch of tobacco. The palate brings richer black-fruit tones, with oak spice and chocolate adding depth around the fruit. Tannins provide a firm mountain framework, while freshness keeps the long finish lively and the texture composed. Allow time in the glass for the oak and fruit to settle together. Rosemary lamb chops, grilled beef with a pepper sauce or a wild-mushroom tart make thoughtful partners, meeting the wine's savoury complexity and structure without requiring an especially sweet or heavy sauce.
Winery Background Houyi is one of Realm's site-specific expressions of Napa Valley, allowing Pritchard Hill to speak through Cabernet Sauvignon rather than a valley-wide blend. The individual blocks contribute different elements to the final composition, and French oak maturation adds shape and seasoning around the fruit. In 2021, the five-block selection gives the wine both density and finesse, with a supple profile within its substantial frame. This combination of clear vineyard identity, layered fruit and persistent structure is central to the bottling's character and gives it room to develop with careful cellaring.
